Barn Door Beergarden

Hi, guys!

I’m back with a review on a new restaurant in Accra.

Barn Door Beergarden is a restaurant in Nyaniba, centred on serving local craft beer & the kind of food that goes along with it. It’s a casual space, with wooden seating, concrete floors & plants everywhere.

I didn’t take photos of the inside, but it plays very much into the concept of a barn & personally, I enjoy these kinds of architectural conversions.

The outdoor space is nice & breezy & there are umbrellas to cover you from the sun.

They have quite a casual menu which I think is a cross between “heavy” & “finger” foods, like pizza & tacos which goes with the general vibe of the space.

To drink, I got a Hibiscus Beer from Tale [on tap] & I really enjoyed that. It was a little sweet from hints of the hibiscus, but not in an overpowering way. I’ve never had a fruity/floral/herbal beer, but this was really refreshing.

My date on the other hand was in quite the ‘brunch’ mood, so with a lot of enquiries & accomodations, the bartender & waitstaff brought us some Prosecco & a pitcher of juice so we could have mimosas. This wasn’t a menu option, so I thought it was really sweet & fantastic customer service to indulge us the way they did.

To eat, we got a seafood platter, some hotdogs & some grilled chicken. The seafood platter was fantastic. The prawns were big & seasoned nicely, there was this fish [I don’t know what kind] that was so juicy & flaky. So good. The calamari wasn’t bad, it could’ve been a bit crispier, but it was tasty. The fries had a Cajun seasoning which was also good [you can’t really screw up fries], but the zucchini was a little boring for me. The pumpkin mash made a good “dipping sauce” for the platter also. I really enjoyed it.

I got a California hot dog, which I think would’ve been better with a different kind of sausage. There’s avocado on the hotdog with tomatoes & mayo & cheese so I think a more seasoned sausage with a bit of a bite to it, would’ve complimented the flavours & the textures better.

I have a personal bias towards grilled chicken in general so I’m very rarely impressed by it, but as far as cooking goes, the chicken was done well. It was soft & seasoned.

Now, the price range.

Food ranges from GHS 15 – GHS 320, drinks range from GHS 25 – GHS 2200.

The waitstaff was friendly & attentive. Barn Door Beergarden is open Monday to Sunday from 12pm to 11pm till Saturday, & till 10pm on Sundays.

Go check it out & let me know what you think.

Tribeca

Hi, guys!

I’m back with another review [back to back, right? I know. Crazy…] of a restaurant I’ve been meaning to check out.

Tribeca is an Asian-fusion restaurant in Accra, with a lovely outdoor space, as well as indoor seating. There’s this humongous ceiling fan I’m completely obsessed with. Their furnishings are quite “earthy” with wood & clay accents everywhere.

To drink, I got a cocktail called The Mask. It was tropical & fruity, not too sweet, not too strong. It was good.

To eat, for starters, my date & I shared some spicy edamame & tempura prawns, then we got some guacamole & chips on the house. The chips were fresh & crispy, the guac was fresh, the edamame was good & the prawns were quite tasty. As far as starters go, there were no complaints.

For mains, I got a Steak Me Home which was a steak poke bowl, & my date got a Have a Teriyaki-ffick Day which was a salmon teriyaki poke bowl.

Personally, I’m not a fan of sticky rice, so this was a little difficult for me to get through. Seasoning-wise, there wasn’t much going on either. There wasn’t enough salt, or a taste of anything else, really. As a dish, it was a bit bland for me. My date, on the other hand, enjoyed her meal quite a bit.

Now, the price range.

Food ranges from GHS 80 – GHS 250 and cocktails range from GHS 85 – GHS 95. I unfortunately didn’t see the cost of other drinks as I only got the cocktail menu.

Go check it out & let me know what you think.

Thanks for reading.

Lasu Lo

Hi, guys!

Back with a review of a spot I’ve been meaning to check out for a few years, to be honest. So glad I finally got the chance.

Lasu Lo is a steakhouse/BBQ spot in East Legon. It has open space with ample seating spread out, so you can enjoy the privacy of a meal without being shoulder to shoulder with another table. As a fan of outdoor seating, this was perfect for me.

The attraction that made me want to check this spot out is the fact that your meat selection is brought to you right off the grill & chopped/carved in front of you.

Also, you have to make a reservation before you go because you have to make a selection of your preferred “meats” for barbecuing. My date & I chose sausages, chicken, turkey, lamb & beef, with an assortment of sides.

The waitstaff are neat, wearing gloves each time they handle the food. It was nice to see that specific consideration.

They also wait until you’re ready for the next selection before they bring it, which is important because who wants cold barbecue?

They don’t really do cocktails, so the drink options were limited to water, red wine & the usual soda options [coke, sprite…]. I don’t like red wine & I usually don’t drink soda, so this was quite limiting for me. I ended up with a Sprite and water while my date had wine.

To start us off, they brought the sausages [they ask what you want to start with before they bring in the food] which were seasoned very well & tender even though the skin was nice & taut.

For the sides, they brought some naan, a fresh salad, some coleslaw & a basket of “assorted fries” with were French fries, fried yam & fried [Ghanaian] sweet potato, and a bunch of different condiments.

The fry-basket was honestly one of my favourite things on the table, & so innovative because all three of those root vegetables go so nicely with almost any kind of protein. The contrast of textures & flavours was so good.

The salad was fresh & crunchy, the coleslaw was cool & creamy and the naan was warm. The sides were a perfect accompaniment to the grilled meat.

Next was the chicken & turkey wing. With regards to tenderness, they were both juicy & soft, but they both had a taste I couldn’t get behind so I couldn’t get through much of either.

After that was the lamb and beef, both of which were also tender & tasty but by the time they had come to the table, I was pretty full, so I couldn’t finish it all.

Now, the price range.

At the time I went, there was a range from about GHS 200 – GHS 800, but there have been price adjustments recently, so I am no longer sure. The upside is that you find out what the prices are when you make your reservation, so regardless you’ll know what you’re paying before you even get there.

Lasu Lo is open Thursday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 22:00. I didn’t see a sign indicating where exactly the restaurant is, just a big gate, so look out for that.

Check it out & let me know what you think.
